Whether you have a corporate Geographic Information System (GIS) or you use Google Maps to find your way through a new town, you understand the power of GIS as a decision support, reporting and integration tool.
All Tempest systems can be integrated with your Geographic Information System (GIS) whether it is a desktop GIS, your web-mapping system, or a Google Maps implementation that overlays your data onto Google’s basemap. This integration provides a link to a spatial view of all Tempest properties so that Tax Accounts, Utility Accounts, Dog and Business Licences and permits and applications can be viewed on a map, properties can be added to permits and spatial queries can be run to identify permits and inspections that belong to particular geographic areas.
The GIS interface provides a two-way connection to your existing GIS and/or to Google Maps, providing your users with the GIS environment to which they are accustomed. Any Tempest account attached to a property can have a one to one, one to many or many to one relationship with a CAD or GIS polygon. This enables you to attach single family dwellings, commercial properties, strata and apartment properties to single or multiple properties on a map.
This map interface currently works with whatever internal GIS application you have developed and is also available from Tempest’s Web Inquiry. The current URL based application provides a wrapper program that runs your GIS within a Tempest window and allows it to be viewed once on a desktop and then connected to any Tempest application. It utilizes the strengths and familiarity of your own GIS application. Tempest provides both the wrapper program and the specifications to connect to your GIS. Included with the service days, is time for Fit Analysis and Training so your staff can understand how the interface works with Tempest. Not included, is the time to make the integration happen at your end, which, for a City, typically takes a GIS Technician a few days. If you do not have staff on hand to provide the integration component, our sister company – Pacific Alliance – can do it for you (for an additional fee) and we can make recommendations if required. The ability to link to properties on a map using Tempest applications is a valuable tool we couldn’t live without. The GIS link enables users to either:
- select properties from any of Tempest’s applications and view their location on a map or,
- select the properties using the City’s existing mapping tools and view them in a Tempest application.
- Improve productivity with the ability to identify and define appropriate properties to which to attach and share information seamlessly throughout municipal hall
- Improve customer service with increased efficiencies of data access and retrieval
- Historical information is maintained, allowing users to find anything over the life of the property
- Save time by setting up properties well in advance of a formal registered plan and/or folio/roll number being set up
- Attach any format of document to a land record, ensuring complete integrity of information
- Select properties from a map and view owner and mailing address data for mail merge notification letters
- Identify properties on a map to create mailing labels
- Use a map to identify all properties included in a particular Local Improvement bylaw, Specified Area bylaw or Business Improvement Area
- Identify found dogs by searching for all licensed dogs in a geographical area

The GIS interface works using the GIS desktop viewing application using a GISLINK id that is stored in both the City’s GIS system and Tempest’s Land database. Configuring integration between mapping data and the current land database mostly involves defining business practices that ensure that all the necessary data is entered into both the mapping system and the Tempest database. Tempest encourages minimal data duplication; however, it is necessary that at least one piece of data be entered in each system. This data is the link between the map polygon and the correct data record in the land database.
